PRIMES Introduces ScanFieldMonitor 2D for Scan Field Correction

PFUNGSTADT, Germany, Jan 26, 2026 – PRIMES pleased to present its latest innovation: the ScanFieldMonitor 2D (SFM 2D). For the first time, the system measures the entire scan field of laser scanner systems, enabling comprehensive calibration and process optimization—faster, more precise, and more efficient than ever before.

In less than a minute, the SFM 2D determines the positional deviations of the laser throughout the entire working area, calculates correction data, and checks its implementation. This reduces the conventional scan field correction from several hours to a fraction of the time. At the same time, the system records other crucial parameters such as marking speed, laser spot size, power distribution, and laser duty cycle. The z-axis shift also precisely records the laser caustics and determines the focus position in relation to the working plane.

PRIMES already revolutionized the characterization of laser scanner systems in 2018 with the ScanFieldMonitor. With the SFM 2D, the proven measurement principle—the scattering of laser light on a special glass structure— has been significantly advanced by expanding it to the entire scan field for the first time.

The new SFM 2D impresses with maximum speed, high resolution, and excellent reproducibility under real process conditions. With just one measurement, numerous process parameters can be reliably captured. The measuring field is scalable and can be adapted to the dimensions of the respective scan field. It can measure wavelengths commonly used in additive manufacturing in the visible and near-infrared ranges.

As a result, the SFM 2D becomes an indispensable tool in laser-based additive manufacturing: users save valuable time and costs, optimize their production processes, and simultaneously increase the quality of their components.
