Leica Launches DS4000 Utility Detection Radar

HEERBRUGG, Switzerland, Jun 16, 2025 – Leica Geosystems, part of Hexagon, today announced the launch of the Leica DS4000. This utility detection system can identify underground assets up to 60% deeper than traditional systems. By integrating IDS GeoRadar’s patented Equalised Scrambling Technology (EsT), it detects underground utilities more clearly at both shallow and deeper levels. It even reveals smaller objects that could have been missed before, such as fibre optic cables.

Beneath the ground lies a tangled network of cables and pipes. As urban spaces – and the ground beneath them – grow more congested, advanced underground detection systems have become essential for reducing risk before breaking ground.

“The DS4000 helps teams work more efficiently, confidently, and safely. With increasing emphasis on safety, tighter regulations, and more complex projects, precise underground utility detection is becoming even more critical,” says Matthias Twardzik, Director Hexagon Detection at Hexagon’s Geosystems division. “With the DS4000, surveyors can deliver accurate data in complex environments, and construction or utilities teams can reduce risk, avoid costly setbacks during excavation, and keep their timelines on track.”

Being lightweight and portable, the DS4000 is easy and safe for a single person to transport and operate. The wheels can be quickly swapped out, enabling one user to tackle both flat surfaces and rough terrain without interruption. Furthermore, the antenna, which extends below the cart, is mounted on an automatic height-adjusting system that lowers it for detection and raises it to avoid obstacles, reducing the risk of damage.

Walter Introduces Tiger·tec Gold Milling Grade WPP35G for Steel, Cast Iron

TUBINGEN, Germany, Jun 13, 2025 – With the Tiger·tec Gold grade WPP35G, Walter is launching new indexable inserts specifically for rough milling steel and cast iron materials. Compared to other milling grades in this application area, the new grade significantly increases performance once again, particularly in terms of Tool life, process reliability and Wear resistance. Here, the WPP35G outperforms comparable grades in steel by an average of 35 % and in cast materials by around 15 %. At the heart of the Tiger·tec® Gold Grade WPP35G is a multi-layer MT-TiCN structure with optimised elastic properties of the crystals. This achieves very high layer adhesion with high inventory. The highly textured Al(2) O3layer on top reduces adhesion (e.g. with ISO K) and serves as a wear-resistant heat shield. The final, gold-coloured TiN layer optimises wear detection.

In addition to the high “texturing” (i.e. crystals arranged in the same direction, as opposed to disordered crystals) and the multi-layer structure, the multi-stage post-treatment in particular contributes to the high Wear resistance of the CVD milling grade. It ensures smooth rake faces and improves Toughness. Its high process reliability makes the WPP35G the ideal solution for low-manpower production and mass production; it can be used for medium to good machining conditions, in Dry machining (especially for steel) or with Lubricant – and in all standard Walter milling cutters from the M4000 Walter BLAXX and Xtra·tec® XT lines. Potential areas of application include general mechanical engineering, the automotive and Aviation industry, as well as the rail vehicle and energy industry.

About Walter

For over 100 years, Walter has stood for competence and quality in the field of machining technology. The company was founded in 1919 by Richard Walter and has its headquarters in Tübingen, Germany.
