Trimble Expands Field-to-Office Connectivity for Heavy Civil Contractors

WESTMINSTER, CO, USA, Apr 28, 2025 – Trimble (Nasdaq: TRMB) announced a new integration between its B2W Track and Trimble Siteworks software systems to automate and enhance progress quantity tracking for earthwork and civil contractors. This unique field-to-office connection allows contractors to compare actual material production quantities achieved to planned quantities more easily and accurately. Continuous assessment of field progress can be critical for civil contractors, enabling them to make timely operational adjustments to protect profitability and to bill for accurate payments as work increments are completed.

Trimble Siteworks software produces precise 3D data sets assessing production quantities achieved, which can now be requested from and transferred to the B2W Track performance tracking application.

“Civil contractors must continuously evaluate how well projects are progressing against budgets, timelines and productivity goals,” said John Sheedy, director of product management at Trimble. “Relying on phone calls, forms, emails and other disconnected communications tools to report on production quantities limits timeliness and accuracy of that reporting. This new software integration brings automation to the process to increase efficiency, eliminate errors and provide an auditable progress trail for billable milestones.”

The new Trimble progress-to-plan reporting workflow allows project managers to create requests for quantity measurements — such as the amount of material added, moved or removed at a site — within the B2W Track performance tracking application. Those requests are relayed automatically to personnel in the field who use Siteworks software to fulfill the request at survey-grade accuracy and send the data back to B2W Track via Wi-Fi or cellular connections. B2W Track users can then review and validate the data and reconcile it with information from other sources such as field logs. Production quantity data can also be transferred from B2W Track to the Trimble Viewpoint® Vista™, Viewpoint Spectrum accounting systems, or to third-party construction accounting systems.

Integrating Construction Solutions for a Connected Jobsite

Trimble Siteworks software provides construction surveying, machine guidance and site management capabilities. For production quantity tracking, devices enabled with Siteworks software technology precisely measure distances, angles and elevations on job sites and process the resulting 3D data sets to assess production quantities in terms of linear distances, areas and volumes.

B2W Track is a comprehensive Trimble performance tracking application for civil construction. Through customized electronic daily logs and field-centric reporting, the software streamlines collection and analysis of data on productivity, labor, materials and equipment utilization.

“This new integration advances the Trimble Construction One vision of connected workflows and data,” said Steve DiBenedetto, product manager at Trimble. “The intuitive process removes friction, delays and risk for errors and makes essential progress-to-plan data available with the push of a few buttons. By building on and linking existing B2W Track and Siteworks software capabilities, we’ve made it easy for new and existing users to automate this important reporting process at no additional cost.”

Availability

The integration between Trimble Siteworks software and B2W Track is available now in North America at no additional cost to contractors that have licenses for both software systems.

Renishaw, Metalpine Collaborate to Develop Durable AM Parts for Harsh Marine Environments

GLOUCESTERSHIRE, UK, Apr 28, 2025 – Renishaw has collaborated with Metalpine, an Austrian producer of high-quality metal powders, to develop additive manufacturing (AM) solutions for marine applications. The partnership is focused on creating copper-nickel alloy (CuNi) powders for AM, to enable a major European naval force to manufacture replacement parts in-house using Renishaw’s RenAM 500Q Flex system.

Operating in saltwater environments presents challenges for naval operations, with hydraulic components and other essential parts subject to accelerated wear and corrosion. Rather than relying on extensive supply chains, the naval force in question chose to additively manufacture replacement parts in-house, opting for CuNi powder parts manufactured on a Renishaw RenAM 500Q Flex system.

Created with a blend of copper and nickel alloy, CuNi powders create a protective layer on the surface of components, preventing degradation. This makes them highly durable in the challenging marine conditions where parts are constantly exposed to moisture and sea elements. Engineers from Renishaw and Metalpine partnered to develop process parameters tailored to two specific copper-nickel alloys: CuNi 10, a combination of ten percent nickel and 90 percent copper, and CuNi 30, using 30 percent nickel and 70 percent copper.

“Metalpine uses a stable and outstandingly efficient process to manufacture high-quality metal powders focused on particles with high sphericity and no pores. So, it is straightforward for us to develop and produce new powders,” explained Gerald Pöllmann, CEO of Metalpine. “Collaborating with the AM engineers at Renishaw was a great experience. The team quickly shared what they achieved with our powders during their qualification process, enabling us to create and deliver powders that fit the application perfectly.”

The powders were used in the RenAM 500Q Flex, an advanced metal AM system designed for R&D and pre-production applications. With an open-loop powder system, this machine allows for efficient and quick powder swapping, making it ideal for developing and optimising material properties, part designs and process parameters. With the Reduced Build Volume (RBV) accessory fitted, material prove out can be performed with as little as 0.25 litres of powder, with the same processing environment and optics as the full-scale production system.

“Metal powders made with copper are difficult to process with AM. CuNi 10 is a highly reflective material which is resistant to laser energy, whereas CuNi 30, due to its higher nickel content, is easier to process,” explained Alex Garcia, AM Design and Applications Engineer at Renishaw. “Leveraging Renishaw’s advanced laser melting technology, we conducted extensive experimentation to refine the energy input parameters. We adjusted the RenAM 500Q Flex power, scan speed and hatch distance to optimise the process for manufacturing with these materials.”

“With these precise settings, we have been able to overcome the material’s challenges, ensuring high-quality, durable parts that can withstand harsh marine environments. This optimisation not only enhances part strength and longevity but also ensures consistent results, allowing our naval customer to manufacture parts that perform reliably under tough conditions.”

The collaboration between Renishaw and Metalpine showcases the potential of AM to reduce downtime in marine operations by providing durable, high-performance parts that can be produced in-house.
