Mastercam Mill Developments Target a Streamlined Manufacturing Process

0

TOLLAND, CT, USA, Mar 3, 2021 – Mastercam Mill offers expanded machining flexibility and an increased emphasis on speed and automation. Multi-axis features, 3D enhancements, and 2D high speed toolpaths combine with dozens of additional new enhancements in a software package intended to improve shop floor productivity.

Here are some of the significant highlights and new functionality in Mastercam Mill:

Multi-axis Improvements

Maintaining climb and conventional machining is crucial for surface finish and tool life. Controlling Climb and Conventional Cutting for Morph, Parallel, Unified, Project Curve, and Flow toolpaths now provide constant control of climb or conventional cutting even while in complex areas that would require use of both sides of the tool.

The new 3+2 Automatic Roughing toolpath automatically makes multiplane 3-axis toolpaths for roughing. Mastercam analyzes the model and stock, and then creates a roughing toolpath. Mastercam calculates the remaining stock and computes a new toolpath. This continues until only a defined amount of stock remains, and results are all contained within one toolpath.

Multiaxis Roughing has been enhanced and renamed to Multiaxis Pocketing and includes new options such as undercut roughing, wall finishing, and floor finishing. Multiaxis Pocketing provides greater control of the tool contract point and machining angle when using Accelerated Finishing tools and ensures that you get the best possible motion.

The new Unified Multiaxis toolpath allows you to select multiple pieces of input geometry to generate the toolpath pattern. Then, using those geometry choices, the toolpath picks the best algorithm to calculate the path.

3D Enhancements

Mastercam’s 3D High Speed Blend toolpath includes many enhancements including the ability to keep created passes equidistant in 3D by adding cuts in steep areas, the capability to set the exact number of cutting passes, reverse cutting direction, confining curves to Tool tip or Tool contact point, as well as two new methods in the Cut method options. By applying Automatic and Custom Angles to Raster Toolpaths, Mastercam now automatically sets different angles to maximize the length of the cut pattern and/or minimize the connecting moves.

2D Enhancements

Advanced Drill, a new toolpath, is a customizable multi-segment drill cycle that is useful for spot drilling, deep hole drilling, and back spot facing. Each segment of the drill cycle can be defined in a table, and for each segment, you can customize any or all conditions. The new Chamfer drill uses tools with a tip angle and chamfers holes after calculating the correct depth based on the desired width or depth. It also allows you to select holes of different diameters or sizes—or that lie in different planes—and machine them in a single operation with a single tool.

Additional Improvements in Mastercam Mill that benefit efficiency include:

  1. Improved toolpath processing time and surface accuracy for many Multiaxis toolpaths.
  2. Toolpath Hole Definition has multiple new enhancements.
  3. A new function, Check Tool Reach, can check your tool and holder against selected model geometry to view where the tool can and cannot reach.
  4. In 2D Dynamic Mill, users are now able to skip pockets based on tool diameter or pocket size.
  5. Contour enhancements such as additional Spring pass improvements and Profile ramping for Lead In/Out moves.
  6. Setting separate feed rates for Entry and Exit linking moves.
  7. And much more.

Maplesoft Offers Maple Calculator Free Mobile App for Students

0

WATERLOO, ON, Canada, Mar 3, 2021 – Maplesoft announced a new release of Maple Calculator, a free mobile app that lets students solve math problems, check homework, and explore graphs from a wide variety of mathematical topics. With the app, students can enter, solve, and visualize mathematical problems from algebra, precalculus, calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. With the latest release, Maple Calculator not only solves the problem, but in most cases, also provides a step-by-step solution so that students can learn how to solve the problem themselves.

MapleCalculator-Steps

Students can enter problems into Maple Calculator using the phone’s camera. They can take a picture of a handwritten or typeset math problem, and the app will use AI technology to translate the image. Alternatively, they can enter the problem directly using the same mathematical notation they would use in their own notebooks. Once entered, students can choose to perform a variety of mathematical operations, such as graphing the 2D curve or 3D surface, finding an integral, solving a system of equations, inverting a matrix, factoring a polynomial, and much more. The available operations change according to the mathematical expression that was entered, so they are always relevant.

With the new release, students also have the option to then ask for the steps that lead to the given result. Consequently, students can use the app not just to check if their own work is correct, but to find the source of the problem if they made a mistake. Students can also use the steps to learn how to approach problems they are unfamiliar with. Steps are available in Maple Calculator for a wide variety of problems, including solving equations and systems of equations, finding limits, derivatives, and integrals, and performing matrix operations such as finding inverses and eigenvalues.

“Students around the world are using Maple Calculator to check their homework, visualize problems and solutions, experiment with ‘what-if’ scenarios and more, and all these activities help them deepen their mathematical understanding and improve their confidence,” says Karishma Punwani, Director of Academic Product Management at Maplesoft. “Mathematics education is incredibly important, and is especially challenging this year with so many students learning remotely. FLORENCE, KY, USA, Mar 2, 2021 – At its February 23 broadcast of All Axes LIVE, an online event series, Mazak continued the roll-out of its new i-H Series of machines with a demonstration of the productivity-boosting INTEGREX i-200H ST Multi-Tasking Machine. Like other INTEGREX i-H Series machines, the INTEGREX i-200H ST features a new design that increases flexibility and enhances machine performance for significantly easier automation integration, allowing shops to boost the output of their existing workforces with the utmost in cost efficiency.

INTEGREXi200HS_SmoothAi_800-600jp

Mazak designed its new INTEGREX i-H Series machines with the flexibility necessary to process a practically endless variety of part types without additional capital expenses. The new machines allow shops to add a multitude of automation options – some of which are retrofittable in the field – as production levels dictate long after the initial purchase of the machine, ensuring easy access to continuous improvement.

The machines within the i-H Series sport new, ergonomic enclosures with compact footprints that require less floor space. In addition, Mazak equipped the machines with faster and more powerful turning spindles, space-saving milling spindles and a new parallel-type lower turret with optional live tooling capabilities. The company also expanded tool capacities for lower turrets and for tool storage magazines along with offering a wider range of chuck size options.

Specific INTEGREX i-200H ST machine changes that ease the integration of automation are the inclusion of front and rear tool setup, a flat-front design to accommodate robots, tool magazine placement at the machine’s rear side and an easily retrofittable automatic machine door. Other new additions that make for easy machine automation are an integrated automatic jaw changer (AJC) and the parallel-type lower turrets.

Requiring no additional robot system and without interrupting machine operation, the AJC quickly exchanges jaws from turning spindle chucks with others in jaw stocker systems located above both of the machine’s turning spindles. These stocker systems have room for up to 10 jaw sets that can be loaded/unloaded while the machine continues to work uninterrupted.

Along with a parallel-type turret (T), the INTEGREX i-200H ST sports both a main and second turning spindle (S) and a milling spindle headstock for DONE IN ONEÒ part production. The new turret design not only works with a greater range of tool lengths, but also eliminates interference when workpieces are held between the machine’s two turning spindles and reduces chip accumulation on the machine’s X-axis covers.

The INTEGREX i-200H ST accommodates a chuck size of 8” and boasts a new extended Y-axis stroke of 8.27″ and X-axis stroke of 21.06″ for maximum part diameters of 23.62″. The main and second turning spindles operate at 5,000 rpm, while the milling spindle comes standard as 12,000 rpm (24/22 kW), with a 20,000 rpm (24/22 kW) version offered as an option.

The INTEGREX i-200H ST also uses the latest Mazak control technology, the MAZATROL SmoothAi CNC. For fully optimized machining operations, the AI-powered technologies within the new MAZATROL SmoothAi control make for fast and easy programming, controlled spindle speed for reduced vibration and greater machine thermal stability. These Mazak technologies include Solid MAZATROL, which allows users to automatically generate programs from 3D part models; SMOOTH Ai Spindle, which automatically optimizes spindle speed based on sensor feedback to minimize machining vibration for superior part surface finishes; and Ai Thermal Shield, which adapts to and learns from environmental changes to control the effects of heat on machining accuracy.

In addition to new SMOOTH TECHNOLOGY solutions and control functions, the new control also provides access to Mazak’s MAZATROL TWINS software, which allows shops to create, on a PC, synchronized digital twins of real machines on their shop floors. The digital twins software solutions provide highly efficient machine operation through SMOOTH Project Manager that ensures efficient job setups and SMOOTH CAM Ai for an open and interactive interface for CAD/CAM software packages.

Mazak showcased the new machine during the company’s recent All Axes LIVE event in February 2021.

VARIAXISi800NEO_SmoothAi_800-600jp

Among the primary enhancements on the VARIAXIS i-800 NEO is the MAZATROL SmoothAi CNC. It features such functions as SMOOTH Machining Configuration (SMC) for process optimization with real-time operator control of a wide range of cutting parameters and Ai Thermal Shield for stable machining accuracy through smart compensation for heat displacement. Also with the launch of the MAZATROL SmoothAi, Mazak introduced its SMOOTH Project Manager Gateway software as an available option.

Working with external CAM software such as Autodesk’s Fusion 360, SMOOTH Project Manager Gateway allows access to internal machine data, which enables the Fusion 360 programmer to query the machine to download machine models, current tooling configuration, offset data, stroke limits and many other configuration parameters. This information can then be used at the CAM workstation to create more accurate machine programs configured to the limits and capabilities of the actual machine.

Additionally, highly realistic program simulations with current, real-time setup information can be achieved giving even less experienced operators the confidence they need to run highly complex part programs. The machine’s tooling configuration can be modified and updated at the Fusion 360 workstation and sent back to the machine for operators to complete the setup more accurately than ever before.

In terms of speed, the VARIAXIS i-800 NEO now achieves rapid traverse rates of 1,890 ipm (48 m/m) in the X, Y and Z axes that contribute significantly to reduced cycle times. To accommodate larger workpieces, axis strokes increased to 29.52″ in X, 35.03″ in Y and 23.62″ in Z (750 mm/890 mm/600 mm). Maximum workpiece weight capacities are 2,204.62 lbs (1,000 kg) on the single-table version of the VARIAXIS i-800 NEO, and up to 1,543.24 lb (700 kg) with a two-pallet changer.

The machine now handles maximum tool lengths up to 16.33 inches (415 mm) in available magazine capacities of 30, 40, 80 120 tools. A new servo drive shortens tool wait times by up to 58%, and a 4.3 second chip-to-chip tool change time helps further reduce noncut time.

For additional flexibility, automation options include a two-pallet changer, along with the Mazak Multi-Pallet Pool (MPP) compact multiple pallet stocker system and the modular Mazak PALLETECH System. The VARIAXIS i-800 NEO can work within the same PALLETECH cell alongside other popular Mazak machines, including the HCN5000 and HCN5000/50. To support hydraulic and pneumatic fixturing, the machine provides nine ports with a single table configuration and four ports inside plus eight outside the machine for two-pallet changing.

“Visibility into field resource utilization is key to project profitability,” said Dustin Parkman, vice president, project delivery, Bentley Systems. “The addition of E7 to Bentley’s SYNCHRO digital construction delivery solution complements our industry-leading 4D construction modeling with field-based resource management tools that are essential for heavy civil contractors. This new combination makes possible a truly comprehensive digital construction delivery solution for heavy civil contractors everywhere.”

E7 has been deployed on over 350 projects valued at more than AUD 50 billion. On the Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway (CR2SM) AUD 812 million Bruce Highway Upgrade project, the Fulton Hogan Seymour Whyte joint venture uses E7 to deliver daily productivity insights and optimize resource deployment to drive better cost and schedule outcomes. E7 ensures that data from 115 subcontractors is efficiently captured and can be used with confidence for productivity tracking, progress measurement, and payment of invoices. Brad Thompson, CR2SM project director, said, “Managing a large project of this nature requires failsafe systems that ensure large volumes of information can be processed accurately and fast. The efficiency of E7 has saved our project time and money, as it minimizes errors and maximizes productivity.”

Hugh Hofmeister, E7’s chief executive officer, and Adrian Smith, E7’s chief technology officer, join Bentley as director of product management and director of product development, respectively. Hofmeister said, “After more than 10 years of working, first as Envision and then as E7, to develop the leading field-based construction delivery solution for Australian and now global projects, Adrian and I and our colleagues are excited to be joining Bentley. There is already great alignment between E7 and Bentley’s SYNCHRO team. Our shared vision will accelerate the adoption of 4D construction digital twins that will significantly benefit our users in driving more profitable and predictable project outcomes.”
