Stratasys, Origin Join to Offer 3D-Printed Nasal Swabs to Healthcare Providers for COVID-19 Testing in USA

0

EDEN PRAIRIE, MN, USA, Apr 27, 2020 – In response to the pressing need for more COVID-19 testing, Stratasys, Inc. and Origin have signed an agreement in which Stratasys will market and promote Origin 3D-printed nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs to healthcare providers and other testing centers in the U.S.

NP-Swab

As widely reported, widespread testing of millions of people is currently hampered by a shortage of testing supplies. Each Origin One 3D printer has the ability to produce batches of 1,500 Origin NP O1 Swabs at a time, multiple times daily. Origin is moving towards a streamlined process allowing the production of approximately 190,000 per day, or 1.3 million per week.

Stratasys will leverage its position as a leading provider of 3D printing solutions to he healthcare industry to market Origin NP O1 Swabs. Stratasys has already been actively serving healthcare systems across the country during the pandemic by leading a coalition that has been providing 3D-printed face shields to nearly 100 front-line organizations. To date, the coalition has provided about 40,000 shields at no cost to health systems.

Stratasys Americas President Rich Garrity said Stratasys is ready to help get millions of swabs to wherever they are most needed. “We have tremendous confidence in Origin’s 3D printing technology, and we’re confident in our ability to help bring them to market efficiently,” he said.

Origin CEO, Christopher Prucha said Origin is ready to scale quickly. “We believe widespread testing can help save lives and get our economy going again, and we’re confident that our Origin One technology and simple material requirements will be able to produce millions of swabs to meet the need,” he said. “We’ve been impressed by the speed with which Stratasys has been able to provide thousands of shields to healthcare systems across the country and believe they are the right partner for helping get millions of swabs where they are most needed.”

Origin swabs were tested in a clinical trial with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, an academic medical center affiliated with Harvard Medical School. Origin reports that results show Origin swabs performed the highest with regard to concordance to control swabs compared to two other 3D printed swabs. In addition, in subjective feedback, Origin swabs were preferred over the other 3D printed swabs.

Each Origin NP O1 Swab is autoclavable and individually packaged. More information is available at www.stratasys.com/covid-19, along with other information about how Stratasys is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

StopCovid Project-Team, Ecosystem of Contributors Join to Develop a Mobile Contact Tracing App for France

0

PARIS, France, Apr 27, 2020 – The French government has entrusted Inria with the operational management of the research and development project called “StopCovid”, which brings together the expertise of national players, both public and private, within the StopCovid project team. All these players are contributing to the work already under way to provide all French citizens with a tool to better protect them against COVID-19

Sharing the guidelines set by the Government, the project is based on five foundations:

  1. The use of the StopCovid app as part of the global strategy for managing the health crisis and epidemiological monitoring. StopCovid project is an additional brick that provides public health actors with a decision-making support for the deconfinement phase.
  2. Strict compliance with the data protection and privacy framework at national and European level, as defined in particular by French law and the RGPD, as well as the toolbox recently defined by the European Commission on proximity monitoring applications.
  3. Transparency, which notably involves the dissemination, under an open source license, of the specific work carried out within the framework of the project. This is in order to provide all the guarantees in terms of controls by society: transparency of algorithms, open code, interoperability, auditability, security and reversibility of the solutions. Thus, this solution could offer basic building blocks that can be used by all countries that wish to use them.
  4. Respect for the principles of digital sovereignty of the public health system: control of health choices by French and European society, protection and structuring of health data assets to guide the response to the epidemic and accelerate medical research.
  5. The temporary nature of the project, whose lifespan will correspond, if deployed, to the duration of the management of the Covid-19 epidemic.

The project is conducted under the supervision of the State and gives rise to regular interactions with independent control authorities, notably the CNIL (Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertés – French Data Protection Authority). It also involves DINUM (inter-ministerial directorate for digital).

The project, in its prototype construction phase, involves public and private organisations acting on a pro bono basis, as part of the StopCovid project team.

At European level, the project is also being carried out in close cooperation with national teams developing comparable applications in Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Spain and Norway, based on comparable approaches and ensuring interoperability.

Within the project, coordinated by Inria, the members of the StopCovid project team are involved in their field of expertise:

  1. Inria: coordination and transmission protocol, privacy-by-design;
  2. ANSSI: cybersecurity;
  3. Capgemini: back-end architecture and development;
  4. Dassault Systèmes: SecNumCloud qualified sovereign data infrastructure;
  5. Inserm: health models;

  7. Orange: application distribution and interoperability;
  8. Santé Publique France: integration and coordination of the application in the global strategy of contact tracing;
  9. Withings: connected objects.

Alongside them, the entire ecosystem of research, innovation and companies is mobilized through the “ecosystem of StopCovid contributors”. Open, it brings together organizations or individuals who have shown their willingness to participate in the project, either through spontaneous contributions or in response to requests, whether through participation in technical expert groups, think tanks, provision of open source code, sharing of feedback on comparable solutions, or participation in field experiments.

Medidata Launches myMedidata Platform, Features COVID-19 Symptom Tracker

0

NEW YORK, NY, USA, Apr 24, 2020 – Medidata, a Dassault Systèmes company, announced the launch of myMedidata, an advanced, intuitive platform for patients to enable flexible participation in clinical trials for new medicines and vaccines. myMedidata provides a unified experience for patients, encompassing all of the capabilities of Medidata’s industry-leading, regulatory-compliant Rave platform and Patient Cloud tools.

229

This first release of myMedidata includes a research-based COVID-19 symptom tracker, that is designed to support research studies and advance scientific understanding of the virus. It will be made available to Medidata customers free of charge. This app will provide sponsors the ability to collect symptoms directly from research participants who may not otherwise be able to continue with traditional site visits. It also allows researchers to recruit large registries of individuals to monitor their health status with respect to COVID.

“It is critical for the life sciences industry to understand the effects of SARS-CoV-2 on patients, and to find ways to forge ahead with research across all therapeutic areas, from COVID-19 to cancer”, said Glen de Vries, co-founder and co-CEO, Medidata. “The early launch of myMedidata allows sponsors to gather patient-reported COVID-19 symptoms in ongoing and new research programs. We are providing this capability on the Medidata platform free of charge, in response to the pandemic crisis.”

myMedidata provides the industry’s single most comprehensive, integrated tool set for all aspects of patient-centered research. These include eConsent (an electronic patient consent system for clinical trial participation), eCOA (electronic clinical outcomes assessment) / ePRO (electronic patient-reported outcomes), Wearable Sensors (collecting data from biosensors and wearable technology) and Virtual Trials.

This virtualization of clinical trials – using patient-facing technologies to allow clinical research to be conducted remotely – is essential in the current healthcare environment. A recent White Paper, COVID-19 and Clinical Trials: The Medidata Perspective, demonstrates the effect of lock-downs and quarantines on new patients entering clinical trials for actively recruiting studies, and how digital solutions can mitigate those issues to support the continuation of those studies.

“We need to do everything we can to help patients continue their care in existing clinical trials. We can’t allow the public health threat caused by COVID-19 to create another set of threats for these patients,” added de Vries. “myMedidata is a crucial step in keeping patients involved and supported, regardless of their location.”

myMedidata was built using insights generated by the company’s Patient Centricity by Design framework, where patient advocates regularly engage as a part of the Medidata software design and development life cycle. The new platform provides patients the opportunity to view their own clinical data (current and historical) and increases their engagement with the study team.

“Therapeutics and vaccines cannot be tested without the most critical components in clinical research: The patients, and their ability to participate,” said Anthony Costello, senior vice president, mHealth, Medidata. “Making research more patient-centric and giving patients the ability to virtually access and actively engage in their own health care needs to be the new normal.”

Medidata is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dassault Systèmes, which with its 3DEXPERIENCE platform is positioned to lead the digital transformation of life sciences in the age of personalized medicine with the first end-to-end scientific and business platform, from research to commercialization.

Leading Healthcare Companies Announce COVID-19 Research Database

0

PARIS, France, Apr 24, 2020 – A consortium of leading healthcare companies today announced the launch of the COVID-19 Research Database, a secure repository of HIPAA-compliant, de-identified and limited patient-level data sets made available to public health and policy researchers to extract insights to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

The database is a pro bono, cross-industry collaboration. Collaborators include Advarra, Aetion, AnalyticsIQ, Arcadia.io, Berkeley Research Group, BHE, Change Healthcare, Datavant, Elsevier, Glooko, Health Care Cost Institute, Healthjump, Helix, Medidata (a Dassault Systèmes company), Mirador Analytics, Munich Re Life US, Office Ally, OMNY, Parexel, Prognos Health, QIAGEN, SAS, Snowflake, Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma, Symphony Health, Veradigm, and Verana Health.

Researchers and policymakers seeking to better understand the COVID-19 pandemic have faced challenges because data relevant for this research are hard to access, fragmented and limited in their ability to answer critical research questions. The COVID-19 Research Database contains HIPAA-compliant, de-identified and limited, longitudinal, patient-level data sets from a consortium of institutions and organizations. It comprises a large, diverse repository of real-world data, including medical claims, pharmacy claims, electronic health records, and demographic data. In addition to the underlying data, the repository integrates privacy-preserving patient linking technology and statistical certification, connecting data sources in a HIPAA-compliant manner to provide a more complete view of the patient journey. Researchers can access the COVID-19 Research Database via an analytic platform, enabling them to conduct large-scale studies while protecting patient privacy.

Some examples of the types of assessments that can be conducted using the COVID-19 Research Database include evaluations of drug effectiveness utilizing de-identified electronic health record and claims data, identifying which demographic factors and pre-existing conditions are most closely correlated with ventilator support or excess mortality, and measuring the public health impact of quarantine measures put in place in different geographies.

Researchers interested in accessing the database can submit a proposal to the Scientific Steering Committee, chaired by Dr. Mark Cullen, the Founding Director of the Center for Population Health Sciences and a Professor of Medicine, Biomedical Data Science, and Health Research and Policy at Stanford University. Researchers whose submissions are accepted can then access the database at no cost. Research findings can be submitted to and made available through peer-reviewed publications.

“The first challenge that many researchers have run into with this crisis is the difficulty of accessing high-quality health data that can be used to answer pressing questions such as drug and non-drug treatment effects, factors that drive differential risk of catching the disease and very different outcomes in those who do,” said Dr. Mark Cullen, Professor of Medicine, Stanford University. “As a massive public-private collaboration, the COVID-19 Research Database offers researchers a solution and a chance to dramatically accelerate our understanding of this highly infectious virus.”

Additional members of the Scientific Steering Committee and Advisory Board include Dr. Don Berwick, President Emeritus and Senior Fellow, Institute for Healthcare Improvement; Niall Brennan, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Health Care Cost Institute; Dr. Abel Kho, Director, Institute for Public Health and Medicine, Northwestern Medicine; Mina Hsiang, VP, Policy, Devoted Health; Dr. Louise Ivers, Executive Director, Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Global Health; Carolyn Magill, Chief Executive Officer, Aetion; Deven McGraw, Chief Regulatory Officer, Ciitizen; Dr. Charles Safran, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and former Chief of Clinical Informatics at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center; Dr. David Shulkin, former United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs; Lisa Simpson, President and Chief Executive Officer, Academy Health; and Michael Stebbins, President of Science Advisors and former Assistant Director, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed many of the gaps in America’s healthcare infrastructure, one of which is the challenge of accessing and connecting relevant data to answer pressing research questions,” said Niall Brennan, President and Chief Executive Officer, Health Care Cost Institute. “The COVID-19 Research Database is focusing on getting the most valuable data to researchers as quickly as possible and represents one of the largest public-private repositories of real-world data ever assembled.”

“In a global pandemic, it’s all hands on deck to fight the virus and tackle the barriers we face to overcome it. We have the data, and we have the technologies to connect it. We need to use these to have a positive impact in the fight against COVID-19 while maintaining and protecting the rights to privacy of individuals within the data,” said Jamie Blackport, Chief Executive Officer of Mirador Analytics.

“Understanding and addressing COVID-19 is the challenge of our time,” said Travis May, Chief Executive Officer of Datavant. “It has been inspiring to work with the health data and scientific communities to rapidly assemble a high-quality database designed to allow researchers to build foundational knowledge about this highly infectious and destructive disease.”

Usability & Interface

  1. Ribbon Interface Enhancements – When using the Ribbon Interface, as you change either the UI Scale or Icon size the Size and Style (with or without text) of the icon will dynamically change. In addition, a new local menu option has been added whereby users can now change the icon size/icon text to “Large Image and Text”, which allows for display of a larger image of the tool icon with the associated text.
  2. Performance Improvements – In GDI draw mode, transformation operations such as Move, Rotate, and Scale have been sped up by an order of magnitude!  The creation of Sectional Views and Objects in the Drafting Palette has been greatly sped up, and the redraw speed of drawings containing lots of small objects has been accelerated.
  3. Repeat Last Command – A new Repeat command allows user to repeat the previous command with a single click.
  4. Command Line Enhancements – New options have been added to the Command Line that allows for support of the Dark user interface theme, and for scaling of the User Interface to better support visibility of icons and menus when using high resolution, 4K monitors.
  5. Auto-Numbering – The new, Auto-numbering tool allows you to select multiple text entities and have them auto-numbered.  Numbers are placed either at the end of each text block or can replace the text block.
  6. Best Fit Circle and Line – The new Best Fit Circle and Line tools allow the user to draw a circle which is best-fitted through 3 or more defined points, or a line through 2 or more points. Points can be extracted from a specified location or a specific object.
  7. Constraint Animation – Dimension values that drive angles, lengths, and distances within a constraint system can now be animated.  Animating these values provides powerful visual feedback to the range of motion issues common in mechanical design problems. The tool extends into 3D motion analysis when the dimension values are part of a 2D constrained sketch that is used to define 3D extruded, sweep, or lathed shapes.  Animating the dimension value automatically updates not only the sketch but the dependent 3D part.
  8. 2D Edit Mode – The new 2D Edit mode makes it much easier to design in 2D by turning off 3D objects, editing and modification tools.  At a local menu level, only the 2D Selector is enabled, which then works with the selected object’s Coordinate System. The 2D Edit mode can be turned off by a simple click.
  9. Drafting Palette Improvements –   Users can now define the Scale of Drafting Object through the local menu Properties of the Object.  In addition, as with Paper Space View Ports, the Drafting Palette now has an Option to select a Layer Set.  The Layer Set can contain both visible and non-visible layers. This enables the user to display only what information is needed in the Drafting Palette Object.
  10. Covering Tool – Modeling complex shapes is now easier with the introduction of surface covering.  Covering is the process of fitting a NURB surface to a set of outer curve boundaries.  Covering compliments existing skinning and lofting tools with a technique often used to fill or close openings in surface models. For controlling the interior surface shape, covering also includes the option to specify guide curves.
  11. Select Feature or Defeature a Part – Using the Facet Editor, you can now select all similar classes of ACIS Objects – Blend Networks, Blend Sequences, Protrusions or Depressions, of a body part simply by selecting a single facet of that part.  A powerful tool for replacing or removing a feature from an imported 3D part with no History.  Additionally, using the local menu of the Facet Editor, you can now make copies or delete selected facets from a solid object and the Facet Editor now has the ability to work in multiple, open drawing windows.
  12. Mass Properties and Generated Weight Reports – Now, when assigning a material to a 3D Solid object, the Density of that object is applied based upon the material. Knowing the Density and the Volume of the 3D object enables TurboCAD to now display through the Mass Properties tool, that 3D object’s or collection of 3D objects’ weight.  An additional new tool then allows the user to generate a Weight Report and export it to a Bill of Materials.
  13. 3D Print Check Tool – Before sending your design to your 3D printer, gain valuable information about your 3D model regarding its printability.  This new tool will effectively identify any issue in your design before sending it to the printer, and allow you to then fix it in TurboCAD.  A great tool for saving you time and unnecessary wear and tear on your 3D printer.
  14. Updated ACIS Engine – The ACIS® 3D Modeling engine has been updated to version 29.0, so TurboCAD 2020 now supports import and export of the latest SAT, ASAT and SAB files (v28, v29).

2D Drafting and Editing

  1. Auto-Numbering – The new, Auto-numbering tool allows you to select multiple text entities and have them auto-numbered.  Numbers are placed either at the end of each text block or can replace the text block.
  2. Best Fit Circle and Line – The new Best Fit Circle and Line tools allow the user to draw a circle which is best-fitted through 3 or more defined points, or a line through 2 or more points. Points can be extracted from a specified location or a specific object.
  4. 2D Edit Mode – The new 2D Edit mode makes it much easier to design in 2D by turning off 3D objects, editing and modification tools.  At a local menu level, only the 2D Selector is enabled, which then works with the selected object’s Coordinate System. The 2D Edit mode can be turned off by a simple click.
