AVEVA Donates Over £100K Worth 3D Virtualization Technology to Support the Restoration of TS Queen Mary

0

LONDON, UK, Aug 10, 2020 – AVEVA, a global leader in engineering and industrial software, has donated over £100,000 (GBP) worth of 3D visualization shipbuilding software to support the restoration of the TS Queen Mary, an iconic steamship built in 1933 to serve Glasgow and the West of Scotland. AVEVA will supply its purpose-built solution for shipbuilding that offers integrated 1D, 2D and 3D engineering and design tools pro bono to support the Friends of TS Queen Mary and naval architects Brookes Bell restore the vessel.

ts-queen-maryTS Queen Mary

The transformation of the TS Queen Mary follows a historic life in service, during which she regularly transported more than 13,000 passengers a week throughout World War II and maintained vital transport services on the River Clyde. The last vessel of her kind in the world listed in the Core 40 fleet of the UK’s National Historic Ship Register, as a ship of national pre-eminence.

HRH Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, is royal Patron of the ship. It transported King George VI, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, and young Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret as well as Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt during World War II. The ship is being restored as a heritage destination in Glasgow and will be open to members of the public in 2022.

Advanced Shipbuilding Software – Ideal for Complex Briefs and Accurate 3D Modelling

Friends of TS Queen Mary and Brookes Bell chose AVEVA’s shipbuilding solution to capture the complex shapes of the ship’s design so that they can begin the restoration process.  The software used previously was not parametric, meaning it required a great deal of manual input, increasing the risk of potential inaccuracies in models and drawings, resulting in more design iterations. The introduction of AVEVA’s advanced shipbuilding software will enable the original vessel structure to be 3D-modelled accurately and in detail, seamlessly linking the model to construction and production drawings, so that shipyard production information for replacement parts can be efficiently produced.

AVEVA provides world-leading marine software solutions for the design, production and modification of large and complex projects in the offshore and shipbuilding industries. Offering the full-lifecycle solution from engineering and design, through resource management to smart production into asset performance management and monitoring and control, AVEVA’s shipbuilding technology is the most complete in the market and can integrate the complete shipbuilding process. Once the design phase is completed, AVEVA will use TS Queen Mary’s data – in partnership with the Friends organization – for internal training and future product testing to support the development of vessels for decades to come.

AVEVA is Committed to Sustaining Iconic Treasures

Craig Hayman, CEO of AVEVA, said: “AVEVA is incredibly proud to be supporting the Friends of TS Queen Mary with the restoration this historic vessel. The Queen Mary is a shining example of the UK’s history of innovation and design and this restoration and preservation opportunity taking advantage our state-of-the-art software is an accolade that we are proud to earn. This project will not only enable us to learn more about this historic ship and its famous predecessors but will also provide great insight and know-how for the future development and restoration of similar vessels.”

Andy McGibbon, Senior Naval Architect, Brookes Bell, said: “This is a very exciting project, and with AVEVA’s Shipbuilding & Marine Lifecycle Solutions, we’re able to completely transform the design and restoration process – driving huge improvements in design efficiency, quality, and ensuring that the design is fault free and the vessel is sympathetically restored for the benefit of future generations.”

Iain Sim, Chairman of Friends of TS Queen Mary, said: “Having a fully functional 3D model is a key part of our conservation plan for TS Queen Mary. With AVEVA’s support, we can improve the accuracy and efficiency of the detailed design and steel renewal phases. The commitment to TS Queen Mary from the British marine sector is overwhelming; we are truly grateful to the whole AVEVA team.”

The TS Queen Mary has been described as “The last survivor of her class anywhere in the world” –  a shining example of the iconic Clyde steamer class of ships. Now being preserved as a museum ship, TS Queen Mary was powered by three direct drive steam turbines, and carried 2,086 passengers, making her the largest excursion turbine on the River Clyde.

About AVEVA

AVEVA is a global leader in engineering and industrial software driving digital transformation across the entire asset and operations life cycle of capital-intensive industries.  The company’s engineering, planning and operations, asset performance, and monitoring and control solutions deliver proven results to over 16,000 customers across the globe. Its customers are supported by the largest industrial software ecosystem, including 4,200 partners and 5,700 certified developers. About Friends of TS Queen Mary

Charity Friends of TS Queen Mary was set up to rescue, restore and reopen the famous Clyde-built turbine steamship, the Queen Mary. The charity has raised and invested £3,000,000 (in cash and in-kind) in the project to restore and re-open her as a heritage destination, at Glasgow Science Centre.

History of the TS Queen Mary

TS Queen Mary is the last remaining turbine steamship to be built in Scotland. Built in 1933, she once sailed ‘doon the watter’ from Glasgow to destinations such as Dunoon, Rothesay, Millport and Arran. Her place as a national treasure was secured in 1996 when she was listed on the United Kingdom’s official historical ships register and she’s now the last of her kind in the world. During World War II she carried King George VI, Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother), Princess Elizabeth, and Princess Margaret and Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, the future Prime Minister Anthony Eden and Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery. In her retirement, she served the City of London, at Waterloo Bridge, between 1987 and 2009.

EON Reality, Italy’s University of Genoa Join to Launch VR Education Program

0

IRVINE, CA, USA, Aug 10, 2020 – EON Reality, the global leader in Augmented and Virtual Reality-based knowledge and skills transfer for industry and education, announces a new joint agreement with the University of Genoa to include AR and VR opportunities. The partnership will help to broaden the university’s experience by activating a long-term strategic collaboration relating to the generation of ideas, pre-feasibility studies, and research projects carried out in partnership in the context of technological development activities and innovation.

UniGe-1

The wide-ranging partnership will cover numerous subjects, all of them maintaining a particular focus on how AR and VR usage can assist with education for industrial sectors such as energy, medicine, manufacturing, production, aerospace, and defense.

Shared partnership projects like this one — in which research, innovation and training are closely linked to the territorial economic and productive context — will also help to develop and identify new models and strategies to strengthen the bond with the local people and businesses. While the primary objective will be to help provide VR and AR solutions for education and enterprise, the experimentation of new forms of communication and practical usage of high-end technological content will also create an impact socially and culturally for the area.

The internationalization of research and training activities — both for independent studies as well as through participation in international projects — also represents a strategic structure in the positioning of the two institutions. Through these activities, EON Reality and the University of Genoa will be able to identify common actions in both their global and organizational networks in order to better help promote the scientific, technological and entrepreneurial culture at the local level.

The partnership will also help to expand EON Reality’s network through Italy as well as all of Europe and around the world, while also providing the University of Genoa with the ability to utilize high-end AR and VR equipment for both their in-house education and further research. The highly-regarded school’s 40,000 students and faculty members will now have access to learn, train, and perform more efficiently through interactive and immersive VR and AR lessons both while functioning remotely and upon returning to the classroom.

This collaborative effort comes as academic institutions around the world search for VR and AR ways to improve their education regardless of when classrooms around the world are allowed to open again. It’s a larger part of the reason EON Reality has recently focused on making its services more accessible for instructors and students alike by allowing end-users to create their own lessons and modules with help from both AR and VR experts as well as the Resource Center.

“We believe in enabling students like those at the University of Genoa to maximize their learning potential by adding VR and AR to their usual education. Sharing knowledge and bringing academic possibilities to faculty and students around the world has always been a goal for EON Reality, and we continue to pursue that with every passing day. Partnering with top-notch universities is also a fantastic way for us to reach the local communities and entrepreneurs as well, so we can truly transform regions rather than simply focusing on individual institutions.”, said, Dan Lejerskar, Founder of EON Reality.

As EON Reality has already done with academic institutions like Vaal University of Technology in South Africa and Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Switzerland, the University of Genoa will also be able to contribute to the growing library of AR and VR education and industry lessons within the AVR Platform. In recent months, lesson highlights created by institutions like these have been an integral part in bolstering EON Reality’s remote learning offerings around the world — providing a basis for students to learn and colleges like the University of Genoa to share their excellence in a wide variety of topics and languages.

“The collaboration with EON Reality on the development of VR/AR competencies is a strategic opportunity for our students and researchers. It is allowing us to identify and experiment with innovative models of education, communication and knowledge transfer, and — social and cultural terms — to strengthen the link with our territory. Genoa, the Liguria region, and the Italian northwestern industrial district have a central role in maritime, logistics, and high-tech domains and a strong inclination towards tourism. Surely this cooperation will enhance our region and give rise to future positive development.” said, Paolo Comanducci, Rector of University of Genoa.

About EON Reality

EON Reality is the world leader in Augmented and Virtual Reality-based knowledge and skills transfer for industry and education. EON Reality’s 21 years of success are tied to its belief that knowledge is a human right and should be available, accessible, and affordable for every human on the planet. To carry this out, EON Reality has developed the de-facto standard for Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality-based knowledge and skills transfer software that supports devices from mobile phones to large immersive domes. EON Reality’s global development network — with more than 20 locations worldwide — has created the world’s leading AR/VR library for education and industry with over 8,000 applications and over 40 million users worldwide.
