Placement relies on the team’s ability to create a professional feasibility study of a mining project, including a market study, resource/reserve estimation, mine plan, reclamation plan, economic evaluation, and other site-specific design considerations. The winners of the competition each receive cash prizes for their work. The first place receives $2,000, the second place receives $1,000, and the third place receives $500. Additionally, students receive a certificate documenting their achievement.

West Virginia University had a three-person team: William Burow, John Dickson, and Samantha Fowkes. Virginia Tech came in second place with team members: Thomas Huddleston, Jake Gusler, and Brandon Haraldson. Finishing in third place is the University of Alaska Fairbanks with team members: Isela Amezquita, Matteo Anselmi, Caden Cover, and Zebadiah Fannin.

Carlson started the Annual Senior Mine Design Competition in 1998 with, now retired, Carlson Director of Mining Sales, Steve Richards. The competition began as a means of supporting the mining academic community through competition, providing an extra incentive for students to go the extra mile with their capstone projects. Carlson continues to support mining universities with software and free training sessions to ensure students receive a proper introduction to modern software tools.

“This competition is something significant for us here at Carlson,” says Tyler Faulkner, Sales and Support for Carlson Mining. “We appreciate the chance to see each mining generation develop a working knowledge and ability while putting what they’ve learned to use in a real-world scenario. Carlson has always been proud to work with universities and educational institutions.
