Nikon SLM, OhmSpace Collaborate to Bring In-House Metal 3D Printing for Electric Propulsion Systems

LUBECK, Germany, Nov 4, 2026 — Nikon SLM Solutions, a global leader in metal additive manufacturing, and OhmSpace, a Rome-based space technology company developing next-generation electric propulsion systems for satellites, today announced a strategic partnership centered around the installation of an SLM125 system at OhmSpace’s facilities in Rome.

The system establishes OhmSpace’s first in-house metal additive manufacturing capability, supporting the development and production of high-precision propulsion components for advanced satellite systems.

By bringing metal additive manufacturing directly into its development environment, OhmSpace will be able to accelerate design iteration cycles, optimize proprietary propulsion components, and meet the demanding quality requirements associated with space-grade hardware.

OhmSpace selected the SLM125 platform for its precision, open architecture, and flexibility, enabling the company to develop a dedicated additive manufacturing process tailored to its proprietary resistojet-based propulsion technology.

“We are proud to collaborate with Nikon SLM Solutions as we build the capabilities needed to industrialize our breakthrough electric propulsion technology,” said Matteo Careddu, Chief Operating Officer at OhmSpace. “This partnership enables us to develop a dedicated additive manufacturing application, raise quality standards, and respond quickly to evolving market demands. It also allows us to explore future opportunities to support other space players with high-precision metal AM capabilities, leveraging Nikon SLM Solutions’ powerful systems and strong customer support.”

The integration of additive manufacturing allows OhmSpace to bring critical manufacturing steps closer to engineering and qualification, addressing key challenges faced by emerging propulsion developers such as long supply-chain lead times, limited design flexibility, and the difficulty of rapidly validating new hardware.

The SLM125 system enables efficient low-volume production and rapid iteration of complex propulsion components while minimizing material usage and reducing the costs associated with larger powder inventories. Access to a wide range of qualified materials, including proprietary high-performance alloys, further supports continuous optimization of propulsion designs and a clear pathway toward scaling production as market demand grows.

For Nikon SLM Solutions, the collaboration reflects the increasing role of metal additive manufacturing in enabling advanced space technologies.

“Space propulsion systems demand extreme precision, complex geometries, and rapid innovation cycles,” said Massimiliano Ziliotto,Sales Manager for Southern Europe, at Nikon SLM Solutions. “By bringing metal additive manufacturing in-house with the SLM®125 platform, OhmSpace gains the ability to iterate quickly, optimize designs, and maintain tight control over quality and supply chains. This partnership highlights how additive manufacturing is becoming a key enabler for the next generation of space propulsion systems.”

The announcement underscores a broader shift within the space sector toward tighter integration between design, manufacturing, and qualification processes, where advanced additive manufacturing plays a central role in accelerating innovation and strengthening supply-chain resilience.
