CSIRO’s Kick-Start Program supports innovative Australian start-ups and small to medium businesses by offering dollar-matched funding and access to research expertise. This initiative helps businesses leverage CSIRO’s capabilities for activities like developing new products, processes, and testing commercially viable ideas. In collaboration with Titomic, the Kick-Start Program is providing AUD 49,634 in funding towards the study.

This project will focus on enhancing Titomic’s D Series Cold Spray Systems (D523 and D623) through the integration of Cold Spray Digital Twin (CSDT) technology, aimed at improving system performance and unlocking new commercial opportunities.

The year-long project, which began on October 1, 2024, seeks to use CSDT simulations to visualise key parameters such as particle velocity, distribution, gas flow, and nozzle performance. By comparing these simulations with actual performance data, Titomic will gain critical insights to optimise machine and material performance, reduce nozzle clogging, and improve deposition outcomes.

This strategic initiative comes at a pivotal time, as global demand for advanced cold spray technologies increases across industries like aerospace, defence, and automotive. The integration of CSDT technology will give Titomic a significant competitive edge, enabling predictive performance and system reliability, which are essential for securing future growth.

The collaboration continues Titomic’s strategy of incorporating cutting-edge digital technologies into its cold spray solutions, further solidifying its position as a global leader in additive manufacturing. The development comes soon after the introduction of Titomic’s Augmented Reality Suite for its D Series systems which will also provide enhanced reliability and standardisation of cold spray repairs within defence and aerospace maintenance.

Neil Matthews, Senior Technical Fellow at Titomic, commented:

“CSIRO has been a long-term collaborator, and this project marks an important step in the commercialisation of our D Series systems. The insights we gain will allow us to deliver more reliable, high-performance products to our customers and drive greater value for the business.”
