DN Solutions Launches PUMA VTR 1620 MC Multi-Tasking Vertical Turning Center for Aerospace Machining

The machine is designed to maximize productivity when machining hard-to-machine materials commonly used in the aerospace industry.

Titanium’s low thermal conductivity concentrates cutting heat at the tool edge, significantly accelerating tool wear. Its high elasticity also increases the risk of chatter, making precision machining particularly challenging. Nickel-based superalloys present similar challenges due to work hardening, high ductility, and heat accumulation during machining, all of which accelerate tool wear and reduce machining efficiency. As a result, aerospace machine tools must maintain exceptional torque, rigidity, and thermal stability while delivering reliable performance under conservative cutting speeds and feed rates.

Effective chip control is equally critical when machining titanium and Inconel. Temperatures at the cutting edge can reach several hundred degrees Celsius, while the close contact between the cutting tool and chip often prevents conventional coolant from reaching the hottest area of the cutting zone. High-pressure coolant systems force coolant directly between the tool and chip, reducing heat and friction while improving chip evacuation, tool life, and machining stability.

To address these challenges, the PUMA VTR 1620 MC is equipped with a 140-bar Through-Tool Coolant (TTC) system that delivers efficient chip evacuation and outstanding thermal control during demanding machining operations.

The machine features a highly rigid wide-column structure and offers a larger machining envelope than competing models in its class, making it ideally suited for large aerospace components. Its fully thermally symmetrical spindle, equipped with a high-capacity cooling system as standard, ensures outstanding thermal stability while maintaining high machining accuracy and productivity throughout extended production runs.

As the aerospace industry continues to increase the use of composite materials and adopt more complex structural designs, assembled metallic structures are increasingly being replaced by larger monolithic components that offer greater rigidity and structural integrity. Machining these components demands longer travels, higher structural rigidity, and precise thermal deformation control—all of which are supported by the VTR 1620 MC platform.

By integrating turning and milling operations into a single platform, the VTR 1620 MC minimizes workpiece transfers and setup time, significantly improving overall manufacturing efficiency. The machine features a high-capacity 120-tool magazine and supports Capto® tooling, enabling rapid tool changes while providing the flexibility required for machining hard-to-machine materials and complex aerospace components with confidence.
