Entries Open for Carlson STEM Scholarship Competition on Hydrological Design through Jan 15, 2024

MAYSVILLE, KY, USA, Nov 22, 2023 –  Carlson Software is thrilled to announce its continued commitment to advancing STEM education globally through the introduction of the Carlson STEM Scholarship Competition. This dynamic initiative aims to inspire and support the upcoming generation of hydrology engineers, emphasizing the vital role of hydrological design in our communities.

The Carlson Software’s Hydrology Engineer STEM Learning Simulator offers young, aspiring engineers (and “gamers” in general) the opportunity to learn about water flow in a typical built subdivision environment. The goal of the simulator is to design an approved stormwater network to drain the water from the roads to the detention pond for the lowest cost solution possible.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a student enrolled in a 5th-12th public or nonprofit private school, charter school, community/junior college, state/private college or university with 501(c)(3) status.
  • A copy of the Hydrology Engineer Video Game must have been purchased by the student’s educational institution.
  • The student must produce a stormwater design meeting the criteria of the game and submit a scholarship application to Carlson Software.
  • The application deadline is January 15th, 2024.
  • The lowest-cost stormwater design score in each U.S. state will receive a $3,000 scholarship award, with $2,000 designated to the submitting student and $1,000 to the student’s educational institution.
  • The top 5 “best in the world”, lowest-cost stormwater design submissions lead to a $12,000 scholarship award, with $10,000 designated for the student and $2,000 to the student’s educational institution.
  • The scholarship money will be issued in total to the student’s educational institution and will be distributed by the school’s administration.
  • Participating students can submit multiple scores, but only their lowest-cost design will be considered.
  • The “top 5” winning submittals must be unique from each other, containing the following differences:
  • different number of inlet/manhole “nodes,” or different connection geometry between nodes.
  • at least 4 pipes with lengths differing by over 10% or at least 10 different pipe material or inlet type selections.
  • For students, the scholarship aims to financially assist with education and encourage the pursuit of civil engineering as a major.
  • For schools, the intent is to bolster their STEM educational efforts.
  • Carlson Software employees and their extended families are ineligible for participation.
  • The release of awards to the schools is contingent upon agreement with these terms.
