SEA BOX Selects Sigmetrix for GD&T Training

0

MCKINNEY, TX, USA, Sep 8, 2020 – When SEA BOX, Inc. wanted to improve the understanding and skills of their engineering team on the topic of GD&T, they turned to Sigmetrix, a company that has been helping clients produce better products through mechanical variation management for over 20 years.

SEA BOX, Inc. specializes in the design, custom modification, and manufacturing of ISO shipping and storage containers, refrigerated containers, containerized shelters, modular building systems, and related parts and accessories for purchase or lease. Their team of approximately 250 professionals is split between engineering, quality control, management, fabrication, and production departments. Being able to communicate design intent between departments is critical.

Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is used on engineering drawings and 3D models to unambiguously communicate acceptable limits of geometric variation for a part to function in the product(s) where it is used. Properly using GD&T on 3D models and drawings can facilitate clear and explicit communication to correctly convey the requirements to the manufacturing and inspection teams. The GD&T Courses offered by Sigmetrix allow students to easily grasp the connections intended throughout the GD&T language.  Starting with the most basic concepts and rules, the classes work through the GD&T language and its application from a functional, user-friendly standpoint.  The content is arranged with a focus on maintaining the communication of functional intent captured in engineering documentation between Designers, Manufacturing Engineers, Machinists, Quality Engineers, Inspectors, and Supply Chain personnel.

“We at SEA BOX recently had our engineering team go through the Comprehensive GD&T course and had a great experience. During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic many of us were working remotely, and as such a traditional classroom setting was not feasible. Sigmetrix was extremely accommodating and hosted our courses in a live video conference format and made sure each of us had our course materials in a timely manner. The course was very well organized, and the instructor was excellent at communicating the details of GD&T at various levels of understanding. They were happy to take many questions and made themselves available before and after the daily course time (and even during their lunch break) to ensure that each of us felt comfortable and confident in the material covered,” reported Trevor Leeds, Mechanical Engineer/Project Manager at SEA BOX.

He continued, “Despite taking the course remotely it was very well planned in a manner that allowed myself and my colleagues to fully participate. The course materials are great resources and the instructor utilized very helpful and engaging props and examples to aid in communicating the complex concepts of GD&T. I strongly feel the structure of the course built a great foundation of essential concepts that made each section easily build on the last. My colleagues have shared, and I agree, that by the end of the course we all felt confident in our ability to read and interpret GD&T. We would certainly choose Sigmetrix again for GD&T training and consultation.”

Sigmetrix is dedicated to help everyone in the design, manufacturing, and inspection groups understand the language of GD&T, and its application, through their series of courses.

“Many organizations perceive standardizing on the language of GD&T isn’t worth the investment, but not using GD&T forces manufacturing and inspection personnel to guess far too often what the drawing  specifications mean. Hoping that downstream personnel guess correctly is not an acceptable business strategy,” said Stephen Werst, Director of Customer Success and Product Strategy at Sigmetrix. “We were pleased to be able to help the engineers at SEA BOX, Inc. improve their understanding of, and confidence working with, GD&T.”

About Sigmetrix

Sigmetrix has been helping companies produce better products for over 20 years through a combination of software solutions, training, and consulting services that focus on managing the impact of mechanical variation. For more information, visit their website at https://www.sigmetrix.com.

Enabling Data-Driven Decisioning on the Factory Floor

A key goal for digital transformation is factory automation, which can be slowed down by distance – both physical and organizational – between operational technology (OT) and organizations co-located at factory locations, and IT organizations housed at corporate headquarters. The new Mendix for Industrial Edge platform, announced at Mendix World Version 2.0, empowers factory operators to create custom applications on the Mendix low-code platform that run locally as Edge Apps to collect data, have access to insights in near real-time and provide optimal user experiences to a variety of end users. The Mendix low-code platform is designed to abstract much of the complexities and expand the talent pool for IoT application development, further empowering OT leaders to address their most pressing issues with limited IT intervention. Business developers, domain engineers and plant operations staff can now create Apps for Siemens Industrial Edge without programming skills. When combined with Siemens’ MindSphere, the industrial IoT as a service solution from Siemens, and other Xcelerator cloud solutions, customers can quickly realize the benefits of a completely integrated edge to cloud experience.

Unlocking, Extending, and Personalizing Data from Core Systems

Disparate legacy systems, containing data in various formats and heritage that supports complex physical models can challenge companies in providing developers and engineers secure access to the right data. To help organizations discover, understand, use, and curate data from across the enterprise, and employ it in software development, business intelligence, and other data-rich applications, Siemens announced availability of the Mendix Data Hub. In conjunction with the Mendix low-code development platform, the Mendix Data Hub can help organizations realize a dramatic decrease in application delivery time, as developers no longer waste time searching for the right data, seeking the right data owner, minding API calls, and securing access to the data they need.

Initially, the Mendix Data Hub will connect to the most common industrial data sources, such as Teamcenter software and SAP, with future releases expanding support for other common data services and databases, and industry-specific applications. The Mendix Data Hub can also be extended by eQ’s eQube Data-as-a-Service, as part of a newly expanded partnership between Siemens and eQ Technologic, with a rich set of over 60 smart connectors, providing support for industrial data and system integrations.

SCANLAB Gets New Sister Company from Israel

0

PUCHHEIM, Germany, Sep 7, 2020 – High quality laser scan system manufacturer SCANLAB GmbH has a new affiliate company. TecInvest Holding AG, the parent company of SCANLAB GmbH, is taking a 25 percent stake in the Israeli firm HOLO/OR Ltd. They are recognized as a pioneer in developing diffractive optical elements for industrial applications. By integrating these innovative micro-optical components, such as beam shapers, into its scan solutions, SCANLAB can multiply the fields of application for its products.

HOLO-OR-SCANLAB-Israel-GrossingerIsrael Grossinger, Owner and President of HOLO/OR

Diffractive optical elements (DOE) can be used to specifically shape laser beams. To achieve the ‘diffractive effect’, DOEs employ microstructures etched into a substrate using a lithographic process. Glass is typically the substrate – but plastics, metals or semiconductors can also be used. The Israeli company is regarded as an experienced player and leader in this market segment.

Founded by Israel Grossinger 31 years ago, HOLO/OR is one of only a few suppliers capable of producing DOEs, e.g. beam splitters and shapers, with high damage thresholds that can stand up to high-power lasers. Its expertise encompasses not just design and fabrication, but also a unique in-house simulation software.

Step-by-Step Integration

TecInvest Holding, the parent company of SCANLAB, acquired a quarter of all HOLO/OR shares in August 2020. Over coming years, the holding company will take over all remaining shares in several steps. The acquired company will retain its independence and collaborate closely with sister company SCANLAB on a number of projects. In addition to planned technical innovations, synergies in sales will also be achieved.

“I am very pleased in finding a suitable partner to whom I can gradually transfer responsibility for my company – and thereby entrust ‘my life’s work’ to good hands. As a founder and entrepreneur, one has not only responsibility for his team, but also a wish to see his vision carried forward. And this is exactly what our collaboration feels like,” states Israel Grossinger, Owner and President of HOLO/OR.

“Talks with the team in Israel were very constructive right from the beginning and driven by shared ideas. We’re convinced the gained optical expertise will result in a new generation of highly integrated scan systems,” says TecInvest Holding Executive Board Member Dirk Thomas in explaining the new investment’s advantages.

About SCANLAB

With over 35,000 systems produced annually, SCANLAB GmbH is the world-leading and independent OEM manufacturer of scan solutions for deflecting and positioning laser beams in three dimensions. SCANLAB Celebrates 30th Anniversary

0

PUCHHEIM, Germany, Sep 7, 2020 – SCANLAB GmbH is marking its 30th anniversary as an OEM manufacturer of scan systems that guide and position laser beams. Residing in the Greater Munich area, the supplier of high-quality laser technology components has successfully practiced a one-site strategy. With 30 years of photonics market presence, the pioneering company looks back at continuous growth while also being well positioned for the coming years.

SCANLAB-30_Jahre-ManagementChristian Huttenloher, COO (L) and Georg Hofner, CEO (R), SCANLAB GmbH

Founded in 1990, SCANLAB began small. For its first five years, the company’s fewer-than-ten employees worked from a subleased 100 m2 office in the Munich suburb of Planegg. A broader audience saw its self-developed scan head and associated control electronics for the first time at Munich’s 1995 Laser tradeshow. The system attracted considerable interest along with several orders – and a success story commenced. By 1999, the company had already hired its 30th employee.

Meanwhile, SCANLAB developed into a system supplier, offering a diverse range of galvanometer-based scan solutions. Suitable control electronics and assorted software products rounded out the product palette. The company continues to keep its Research & Development, production and customer service departments, along with most of its sales team, in a single site in Puchheim, near Munich. By this means, all expertise is bundled under one roof, which leads to efficient pathways and quick reaction times. Consistently positive business growth in recent years confirms the strategy’s correctness. Today, SCANLAB employs some 380 employees from 38 nations, and supplies customers across countless European, Asian and North American countries.

When asked about his secret to success, CEO Georg Hofner replied: “Always striving for organizational flexibility, as we see change as an opportunity. Afterall, technological and societal changes are facts of life. Companies must show some resilience and be able to respond adaptively. We’ve succeeded at doing this for 30 years and we aim to continue.”

Solid fundamentals and financial independence also contribute to the company’s favorable prospects. Despite major challenges, like the current Covid-19 pandemic, only limited course corrections were necessary. The only downer, which the management calls, is that the anniversary in 2020 cannot be celebrated as it would do the occasion.

605_9Increased usability for an easier optimization workflow in FINE/Design3D and new wall distance computation algorithm in FINE/Turbo

FINE/Design3D – Increasing the usability for an easier optimization workflow

An additional step in the complete integration of Concepts NREC’s design system AxCent is the availability of AxCent output parameters. The geometric analysis of the turbomachinery, like the computation of curvature, area, and throat, is a response that can be studied or optimized in FINE/Design3D.

The layout of FINE/Design3D is also improved to better include design parameters in the project and define their bounds, with new filters and commands to handle projects with thousands of input variables.

1599184289New filters and quantities for a better integration with AxCent

To limit the user’s effort to set up an optimization project, the vast majority of the actions to set up a SCREENING computation are made available as Python commands: a macro can be automatically recorded and used to generate a similar “screening” computation from the GUI or from a command line.

FINE/Turbo: New wall distance computation algorithm

The distance to the nearest wall is necessary for most of the Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) turbulence models, but getting the distance field using brute-force or recursive methods can require substantial time. In this new release of FINE, a new method combines vector distance transform and wave-front propagation for a speedup between 1 and 2 orders of magnitude.

Hexagon MI Introduces RWP20.50-G-UTP Ultrasonic Probe for Wall Thickness Measurement on Machine Tools

0

SURREY, UK, Sep 4, 2020 – Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division has enhanced its ground-breaking ultrasonic probe for automated wall thickness measurement on machine tools with the launch of two new versions designed for wet machining.

RWP2050GUTP

An innovative ultrasonic touch probe from Hexagon for measuring thickness directly on the machine tool, the RWP20.50-G-UTP has secured success for significantly reducing inspection times and enhancing data capture for dry applications. Now in response to high customer demand, Hexagon has developed a new version of the RWP20.50-G-UTP that can measure wall thickness even when parts are produced with lubricants and coolants.

Inspecting the thickness of a part’s walls is typically a time-consuming manual process that takes place off the machine tool, resulting in downtime. The RWP20.50-G-UTP touch probe from Hexagon transforms the procedure by using ultrasound to automatically measure wall thickness within the machine tool installation.

Until now, however, it has only been possible to use an ultrasonic sensor to measure the wall thickness of parts with dry coupling. Hexagon’s new sensor options for wet coupling not only saves time by enabling operators to take automated measurements directly on the machine tool, it also reduces spending on materials by using the coolant liquid of the machine as a coupling fluid.

Hexagon’s RWP20.50-G-UTP probe offers a choice of sensor heads adapted to different customer requirements and applications. For wet machining, customers can opt for a sensor head with a measurement range of either 0.7 – 9 mm or 1.5 – 30 mm. For dry applications that do not require a coupling fluid, the sensor measurement range is 0.7 – 9 mm.

About Hexagon

Hexagon is a global leader in sensor, software and autonomous solutions. We are putting data to work to boost efficiency, productivity, and quality across industrial, manufacturing, infrastructure, safety, and mobility applications.
