Materialise Develops 3D Printed Oxygen PEEP Mask to Address Shortage of Ventilators

LEUVEN, Belgium, Apr 7, 2020 – In the fight against the corona virus crisis, hospitals are in dire need of mechanical ventilators to treat COVID-19 patients. In response to this shortage, Materialise, a Belgium-based pioneer in 3D printing, has developed the Materialise NIP Connector, a device to convert standard equipment available in most hospitals, into a mask to facilitate breathing for patients by creating positive pressure in the lungs. These assembled masks allow clinicians to reduce the time patients need access to mechanical ventilators, which helps to reduce the strain on ventilator supplies. Materialise has decades of experience in certified medical 3D printing and is now fast-tracking the regulatory registrations that are crucial to ensure the safety of patients and caregivers. The company expects to have the device broadly available for hospitals by mid-April.

Around the world, hospitals are looking for medical equipment capable of delivering air with added oxygen to treat critically ill corona virus patients. Currently this treatment is carried out using mechanical ventilators, which are critically under-supplied. As a result, clinicians today are exploring different methods to apply positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) to the lungs of COVID-19 patients without the use of a ventilator.

Materialise has developed a solution to deliver oxygen and create high positive pressure without the use of a ventilator. A 3D printed connector converts standard equipment already available in most hospitals into a  non-invasive PEEP mask (NIP) that can be connected to the oxygen supply (to facilitate breathing for corona virus patients). This solution gives patients an extended period of time before mechanical ventilators are required for treatment, and helps transition them off ventilators earlier, freeing up these devices for patients in critical need. By using standard medical equipment, including a non-invasive ventilation (NIV) mask, a filter and a PEEP valve, the solution is simple and familiar to use for medical professionals.

Certified medical manufacturing

While 3D printing allows for fast and local manufacturing of medical devices, making it possible to bring solutions to hospitals quickly, it is critical to comply with regulations to ensure the safety of patients and caregivers. Materialise is now fast-tracking the regulatory registration (in Europe and the U.S.). In parallel, Materialise is supporting a clinical trial to test the clinical impact of its use on COVID-19 patients and expects first results to be available within the next two weeks.

The Materialise NIP Connectors will be manufactured at the company’s ISO 13485 certified facilities in Belgium and Plymouth, Michigan and on-site 3D printing facilities of qualified partners. Materialise is looking for partners to get this solution to as many patients as possible.

3D printing is a digital manufacturing technology that makes it possible to create products quickly and locally. As travel and transport become more difficult and speed is of the essence, the ability to manufacture locally becomes more important. In this case, the product was designed in Belgium and can be printed at a Materialise certified facility, or at a hospital that has the capability to do so in a reliable manner.

In addition to the NIP solution, Materialise engineers have developed several innovations to support treatment and containment of the corona virus, including:

  1. A 3D printed door handle attachment, which allows users to open doors using covered forearms rather than bare hands in an effort to reduce direct contact with potentially contaminated shared door handles
  2. A 3D printed shopping cart handle to allow users to steer carts with their arms rather than touching handles with bare hands
  3. A 3D printed connector to adapt Scuba masks to allow for air filtration and oxygen supply

UK-based Renishaw Ramps Up Production of Ventilator Components

GLOUCESTERSHIRE, UK, Apr 7, 2020 – Global engineering company, Renishaw, has started mass-producing critical components for medical ventilators, as part of a nationwide effort to support the NHS in the fight against COVID-19. The company has dedicated a significant part of its manufacturing sites in Gloucestershire and South Wales to produce precision-machined components for two different ventilators manufactured by the VentilatorChallengeUK consortium, with production at the sites now running seven days a week. This follows a huge effort from the project, manufacturing engineering and production teams over the last two weeks.

Like many companies across the UK, Renishaw reacted to the UK government’s call to radically increase ventilator production to treat corona virus patients suffering with respiratory complications. Tens of thousands of these complex machines are needed in just a few weeks.

Marc Saunders, Director of Group Strategic Development, who is leading Renishaw’s response, explains, “When the government called, we scrambled to respond, and immediately realized the daunting scale of the challenge. Ventilators are sophisticated medical devices and we felt that our capabilities would be best applied to helping scale up the production of designs with existing technologies. We soon realized that many other industrial companies were thinking the same way and that we would need our combined capacity and capabilities to achieve this enormous endeavor.”

Within a few days, Renishaw joined with leading companies in the aerospace, automotive, medical devices and motorsport sectors to form the VentilatorChallengeUK consortium, under the leadership of Dick Elsy, CEO of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult. This diverse team is working non-stop to boost production of two proven ventilators, selected by the NHS and manufactured in the UK by Penlon and Smiths Medical.

Dick Elsy explains, “Penlon and Smiths ordinarily have combined capacity of between 50 and 60 ventilators per week. However, thanks to the scale and resources of the wider consortium, we are targeting production of at least 1,500 units a week of the Penlon and Smiths models combined within a matter of weeks. Ventilators are intricate and highly complex pieces of medical equipment and it is vital that we balance the twin imperatives of speed of delivery with the absolute adherence to regulatory standards that is needed to ensure patient safety.”

Within this context, Renishaw’s manufacturing activities form part of a complex network of suppliers that the consortium is coordinating, many of whom, like Renishaw, are making ventilator components for the first time. Mass-production of ventilators, each of which comprises hundreds of diverse components, requires millions of parts to come together for assembly, a huge logistical operation.

“To prepare for the important work that we are undertaking, both for the ventilator project and our global customers in critical supply chains, we temporarily closed our UK manufacturing facilities last week to introduce additional measures to protect the welfare of our employees”, explains Gareth Hankins, Director of Group Manufacturing Services at Renishaw.

He continues, “We have reorganized our factories to increase spacing, as well as zoning areas to restrict movement around the sites. Hygiene regimes have also been enhanced to minimize the potential risk of the spread of infection. Our staff have responded magnificently to this challenging situation and it is wonderful to see the factories back up and running and for us to be playing our part in the national Ventilator Challenge.”

Marc Saunders reflects, “It has been an extraordinary few weeks, with so many companies from different fields aligning on a single goal and pulling together so effectively and so quickly. PTC Launches ‘Robots to the Rescue’ Virtual Design Competition for FIRST Teams Worldwide

BOSTON, MA, USA, Apr 7, 2020 – In response to the suspended FIRST season caused by COVID-19, PTC (NASDAQ: PTC) is inviting FIRST teams around the world to compete virtually in its design competition, “Robots to the Rescue”, in which teams will be challenged to design a robot that can solve a current real-world problem.

FIRST is a robotics community that prepares young people for the future. Each year, the global non-profit organization offers a suite of robotics competitions for students in grades PreK-12. These competitions provide participants with a sense of accomplishment and the understanding that they can do anything with their collective skills, leadership, and confidence. The experience they gain can positively impact their future and take them further than any other sport can. In mid-March, amid school closures and expanded travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 outbreak, FIRST announced the suspension of its current FIRST season.

Students are invited to design and compete virtually in Robots to the Rescue using Onshape – the world’s only pure Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) product development platform. Because Onshape is web-based, FIRST students can collaborate remotely while continuing to hone their engineering skills. As part of the six-week competition, FIRST teams, specifically FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST Robotics Competition teams, will design a robot that can help solve a real-world problem such as providing food and supplies to people in remote places, or removing pollution from the atmosphere.

Mumbai April 3, 2020: COVID-19 is impacting the lives of people globally as well as in India. The Indian Government has taken consequent measures for safety to minimize the incidence of infection. The Siemens Group of Companies in India would like to contribute to fight COVID-19 and commits Rs. 20 crore towards the following:

 

  • Providing critical medical care equipment such as Ventilators & Analyzers to several healthcare facilities across India
  • 40,000 PCR test kits to be delivered to Indian Council of Medical Research
  • Setting up a test lab at the National Cancer Institute in Jhajjar, Haryana, which is converting an 800-bed hospital into a Covid-19 critical care-center
  • Creation of Isolation Units at select Siemens’ facilities
  •  Support to migrant and temporary workers
