Nikon SLM Solutions Empowers Hypersonic, Propulsion Innovation with ATI, BPMI Collaboration

LONG BEACH, CA, USA, May 15, 2025 – Nikon SLM Solutions, a leader in metal-based additive manufacturing technology, announces an exhilarating collaboration with ATI (Allegheny Technologies Inc.) and Bechtel Plant Machinery, Inc. (BPMI), marking a significant leap in hypersonic and naval propulsion development.

ATI has purchased the revolutionary NXG 600E, a production system chosen specifically to address the unique challenges of both U. S. Navy propulsion and hypersonic weapon production. This collaboration aims to unlock new frontiers in defense capabilities, with a strategic focus on leveraging the NXG 600E’s unrivaled 1.5-meter Z height and production capacity. ATI, a global producer of high-performance materials and solutions, has a rich history of pioneering advancements in aerospace, defense, and beyond.

ATI’s planned use of Inconel 625 in the NXG 600E is based on the material’s critical role in hypersonic, naval propulsion, and industrial applications, allowing ATI to serve the Navy as well as other US Department of Defense programs of emerging, critical need. The NXG 600E’s delivery to ATI in June marks a significant expansion of their metal additive capabilities, building on the positive experience with their current SLM125, and their understanding of how to capitalize on Nikon SLM®’s open machine architecture and parameter development capabilities.

Reflecting on the collaboration, Sam O’Leary, CEO of Nikon SLM Solutions, noted, “In the dynamic landscape of additive manufacturing, Nikon SLM Solutions is taking a significant leap forward,” said Sam O’Leary, CEO. ” This strategic development underscores our commitment to delivering American-made ingenuity, superior technology, and empowering the defense and aerospace sectors with cutting-edge additive manufacturing capabilities.”

“The NXG 600E’s expansive build volume and sophisticated support structure capabilities align seamlessly with U.S. Navy propulsion requirements,” expressed Nathan Weiderspahn, BPMI Executive Manager, Industrial Base Management. “Nikon SLM Solutions’ cutting-edge additive manufacturing technology is set to play a pivotal role in advancing the U.S. Navy’s operational readiness, contributing to the maintenance and enhancement of our nation’s fleet.”

ATI and BPMI’s enduring legacies of innovation, excellence, and partnership,  underscores their bid into transforming the world through engineering and materials science.
