Protolabs Qualifies Medical White HPS Material for Digital Manufacturing Service on Axtra3D’s Lumia X1

CHARLOTTE, NC, USA, Jul 8, 2026 – Axtra3D today announced that Protolabs has launched Medical White (MED-WHT 10) for production on the Lumia X1 Hi-Speed SLA platform powered by Hybrid PhotoSynthesis (HPS) technology. The material is immediately available through Protolabs’ digital manufacturing services, marking the fifth qualified material Protolabs now offers on the Lumia X1 platform.

This latest addition further strengthens the close collaboration between Axtra3D and Protolabs, which currently operates three Lumia X1 production systems to support customer demand across multiple industrial and medical applications.

The relationship between the two companies extends well beyond equipment deployment. Working as an integrated engineering partnership, Axtra3D and Protolabs jointly identify high-value applications, select the most appropriate materials from Axtra3D’s ever-expanding ecosystem of material partners, and collaboratively qualify complete production workflows to ensure customers receive validated manufacturing solutions rather than just new materials.

“The addition of Medical White reflects our continued commitment to providing customers with production-ready materials that solve real manufacturing challenges,” said 3D Printing Director of Manufacturing Operations Kenny Capps. “Our collaboration with Axtra3D has enabled us to rapidly expand our Advanced Photopolymers offering with qualified materials that allow customers to confidently move from prototype to end-use production.”

“This launch is an excellent example of how our Axtra Solutions business model delivers value,” said Rajeev Kulkarni, Chief Strategy Officer at Axtra3D. “Our philosophy has to work with leading material innovators across the industry, selecting the best resin for each application and then partnering closely with both the material supplier and the customer to fully qualify that solution on the Lumia X1. Protolabs has become an outstanding example of how this collaborative approach accelerates adoption of additive manufacturing into production.”

Medical White expands Protolabs’ Advanced Photopolymers portfolio with a production-grade material specifically designed for applications requiring biocompatibility, sterilization, dimensional stability and excellent visual appearance. The material supports customers moving beyond prototyping toward regulated production applications while maintaining the precision and throughput enabled by Axtra3D’s HPS technology.

Medical White is ideally suited for a broad range of medical and industrial applications, including:

  • Medical devices, surgical guides, splints and diagnostic components
  • Anatomical models and dental applications
  • Industrial and electronic components requiring dimensional and thermal stability
  • High-detail prototypes and presentation models

The material delivers several key performance advantages, including:

  • Excellent feature resolution and crisp fine-detail reproduction
  • True-to-CAD dimensional accuracy
  • Smooth surface finish for high-quality presentation models
  • High temperature resistance for demanding applications
  • Sterilization compatibility
  • Biocompatibility meeting ISO 10993-5 (cytotoxicity) and ISO 10993-10 (sensitization and irritation) requirements

By combining these material properties with the Lumia X1’s HPS technology, Protolabs can produce highly detailed, production-quality parts while maintaining the throughput required for commercial manufacturing.

The launch also highlights the versatility of the Lumia X1 platform, which continues to support an expanding range of validated materials across industrial manufacturing, healthcare, dental, electronics, tooling and other production applications. Each qualified solution undergoes extensive joint validation to ensure predictable print quality, repeatability and production performance.

About Axtra3D

Based in the US and Italy, Axtra3D is a global company specializing in Hi-Speed SLA systems that eliminates tradeoffs between print throughput, accuracy, feature resolution, and surface finish, typically found in traditional SLA or DLP systems.

The flagship Lumia X1 Hi-Speed SLA system by Axtra3D represents a significant advancement, combining its Hybrid PhotoSynthesis resin polymerization process with TruLayer, a layer separation technology. HPS utilizes both a laser and a DLP to image simultaneously, while TruLayer enables rapid detachment of the active print layer, resulting in a 20X throughput improvement while preserving the accuracy and fidelity of SLA parts.

With a curated material portfolio, Axtra3D has developed over 15 certified solutions for industries such as Industrial, Healthcare, and Dental, serving a global customer base. These solutions range from direct-use ceramic molds to end-use electrical connectors, industrial parts, dental prosthetics, medical devices, jewelry patterns, and more. Axtra3D’s systems are available in North America, the EU, and Japan, and a broad range of customers have already benefitted from its diverse range of applications.

Axtra3D operates with two business models.

Axtra Solutions™: This model provides fully optimized, turnkey 3D printing solutions. Customers receive complete print profiles fine-tuned for maximum performance and reliability, supported by Axtra3D’s Applications team and quality material partners.

Axtra OpenAccess™: This model further builds on Axtra Solutions™ and allows customers the flexibility to experiment with new materials and applications. It supports innovation and adaptability, enabling added flexibility.
