Carlson Announces Winners of STEM Scholarship Competition

MAYSVILLE, KY, USA, Jan 24, 2024 – Carlson Software is pleased to announce the top 5 winning scores for the Hydrology Engineer Video Game Scholarship contest which ended at midnight, Eastern Standard Time, on Monday, January 15th. The winning schools included 3 High Schools and 1 University who had two of the top 5 scores on the LeaderBoard as of January 15th. Each winning school secures $2,000 for administration of the scholarship contest and the winning students each receive a $10,000 scholarship from Carlson Software, to be used for their current or future college education costs.

The lowest cost score that met all gutter spread and hydraulic grade line pressure requirements in the storm sewer system won. All scores were in an approximately $10,000 range, from around $146,000 to $156,000 in the contest involving a 2-road subdivision with single cul-de-sac. Mastery of engineering concepts and pipe material and inlet substitutions were necessary to achieve such low scores. Carlson Software was highly impressed with the quality of the submittals.

Schools with the top 5 lowest cost, winning scores:

(1)  Baton Rouge Magnet School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
(2)  Gibson Southern High School, Fort Branch, Indiana
(3)  Glenville State University, Glenville, WV
(4)  Our Lady of Providence High School, Clarksville, Indiana
(5)  Glenville State University, Glenville, WV

Carlson Software is providing these scholarship payments, $2000 to the winning school ($4000 to Glenville State University) and $10,000 to each student submitting the top 5 “lowest cost” scores.

We are very thankful for the participation, as it establishes our STEM game “ecosystem” and participants. Very soon, Carlson Software will be accepting LandXML2 files from civil engineering firms who wish to see how low design costs can be obtained on their active projects from the Carlson STEM gaming community. The designs for now need to focus on curb and gutter examples and must be submitted in LandXML2 formats, which both Carlson Civil and Carlson Precision 3D Hydrology 2024 can produce. Our gaming community can then try their hand at designing the storm sewer system according to the library of allowable inlets, manholes and pipe types and their unit costs, along with local regulations such as for gutter spread and pipe clearances defined in the LandXML2 format according to specifications and methods Carlson will publish. Firms that would like to participate please submit this form or reach out to us directly.

What the scholarship contest proves beyond any doubt is the power of competition to produce the best design.
