Pune, July 2024 – ModuleWorks has recently completed a significant plantation drive at Kusgaon, near Kasarsai, in the vicinity of Pune, as part of their ongoing efforts to combat climate change and its adverse effects, including rising temperatures, increased CO2 levels, and air pollution. This initiative aims to make a meaningful contribution to the environment while fostering community engagement, raising social awareness, and providing volunteering opportunities for employees.
Pune, like many urban centers in India and globally, faces several environmental challenges:
- Air Pollution: Significant air pollution from vehicular emissions, industrial activities, construction dust, and biomass burning impacts public health.
- Urbanization and Deforestation: Rapid urbanization has led to the loss of green cover and natural habitats, worsening issues like soil erosion, local climate changes, and the loss of natural carbon sinks.
- Climate Change Vulnerability: The city is vulnerable to climate change impacts such as extreme weather events, heatwaves, and changes in rainfall patterns, affecting agriculture, water availability, and overall urban resilience.
During the plantation drive, ModuleWorks employees planted more than 100 saplings of various species. To address the challenge of keeping the plants alive during the hot summer months, ModuleWorks employees will be organized into teams of 10. Each team will share the weekly cost of water tankers, which will be used from March to May to water the plants. This rotational system ensures that all teams contribute to the care of the plants throughout the summer.
ModuleWorks expresses immense gratitude to Mr. Dattabhau Namdev Kedari, Mr. Prashant Tanpure, and other volunteers from Kusgaon village for providing the location and necessary arrangements for the plantation. These volunteers also offered a valuable suggestion for future plantation drives: to plant quality fruit trees so that farmers will voluntarily offer their farmland and take care of the watering activity for an extended period.
