Sandvik Coromant Honored with UCIMU Award at EMO MILANO 2021

SANDVIKEN, Sweden, Mar 2, 2022 – Global leader in metal cutting Sandvik Coromant has been awarded an UCIMU Award by the UCIMU Foundation, the association of Italian machine tools makers, robots, automation and ancillary products. The company was awarded a plaque of merit at EMO MILANO 2021, the global metalworking trade show in Milan, Italy, for supporting the development of a thesis focusing on the application of digital twins for predicting cutting forces in micro milling.

As associated company of UCIMU, Sandvik Coromant supplies Italian machine tool makers with tooling equipment for numerous engineering projects. This relationship also allows Sandvik Coromant to support young people studying engineering by sharing knowledge, advice and contributing to theses.

The aim of the UCIMU awards is to promote the competitiveness of the Italian industry, deriving from the evolution of products, processing technologies, management methodologies and enabling factors, all connected to the machine tool sector.

For 46 years, the association has awarded prizes for degree or master’s degree theses related to mechanical manufacturing and concerning the design, research and development of machine tools, production systems, robotics and automation. The submitted theses must be developed with close relevance to the business realities of the sector and in collaboration with companies associated with UCIMU.

Recently, the company contributed to the thesis work carried out by a student of Politecnico di Milano — a feasibility study on the application of digital twins for predicting cutting forces in micro milling — for the machine tools, robotics and production systems category. “To support the development of the Politecnico’s thesis, we shared our technical knowledge, technological solutions and support material with the students,” said Andrea Bonfanti, center and training Manager for South Europe at Sandvik Coromant. “More specifically, we hosted regular meetings at our Sandvik Coromant Center in Milan, with open discussions dedicated to technical topics about cutting tool features and machining performances while running live demonstrations.

“The thesis examined the digitalisation of chip removal processes, in the application of concepts and tools of Industry 4.0 for milling and micro milling processes. And as leaders in metal cutting, we see great value in supporting such studies. It’s really important that we do all we can to support the future generation of engineers by contributing to their development. We must share our knowledge and skills to those who look up to us if we want them to succeed and uncover new innovations in the future,” explained Bonfanti.

“Sandvik Coromant understands the significance of accessible and accurate tooling data in pre-machining stages, which is vital to helping computer aided manufacturing (CAM) programmers overcome challenges experienced daily.

“Our own digital solutions, such as the CoroPlus® ToolGuide and CoroPlus® Tool Library, demonstrate how much easier and faster pre-machining tasks can be executed. Contributing to this thesis, we proved how the digitalisation of previously manual processes such as tooling item selection and tool assembly creation can help to significantly increase efficiency and machining security. Cutting tool data can in fact be gathered more accurately and used to create precise digital twin representations — a functionality that is fundamental in the modern workflow to prevent errors at the machining stage.

“UCIMU is regarded as one of the most influential representatives of the Confindustria System — the main association representing manufacturing and service companies in Italy. Considering the prestige of this industrial authority, Sandvik Coromant is delighted to have been recognized by the UCIMU and to have supported a budding engineer,” concluded Bonfanti. “We look forward to contributing further to the endeavors of future engineers as we strengthen our relationship with the UCIMU.”
