SCIA Students Contest 2023 Winners Announced

HASSELT, Belgium, Oct 18, 2023 – SCIA, the European market leader in structural analysis software and part of the Nemetschek group, announces the winners of its SCIA Students Contest 2023.

The idea is that students who use SCIA Engineer can show us their art of structural design. This way students can maximize their exposure and show the international industry their work. Not only do winners receive extensive media attention, they also get a money prize.

This year, the jury had the very difficult task to pick just three winners because the technical quality all the participating projects was really high. Also the topics of the presented works were very interesting. All the participants showed a high level of expertise in the field of their studies. At SCIA, we’re very happy that these talented young people will soon join the ranks of civil engineers and will shape our future.

After a long and serious discussion the jury selected 3 winning projects:

WINNER 1ST PLACE:

Lukas Lethmate, Germany, Hochschule Bochum
Pedestrian and cycle bridge Castle Park BedBurg

“The jury was impressed by the very nice design of a slender bridge geometry using a combination of steel and glulam elements. The student used a variety of loads (pedestrian, wind, …) and performed a linear and nonlinear analysis on the structure including 2nd order effects.”

WINNER 2ND PLACE:

Stipe Mandić, Bosnia Herzegovina, Fakultet građevinarstva, arhitekture i geodezije Sveučilišta u Mostaru
Calculation of a residential building.

“A good usage of the BIM workflow was illustrated, going from Allplan to Scia Engineer. In Scia Engineer, different functionalities were used like seismic analysis with the IRS model, concrete design and masonry elements.”

WINNER 3RD PLACE:

João Victor Cordeiro Barros, Brasil, Universidade Federal De Pernambuco – Centro Academico Do Agrest
Structural design of a steel hangar composed of frames formed by laminated profiles

“The student makes use of the full workflow during the design of a Steel Hanger:  linear analysis, stability analysis and non-linear analysis including imperfections and 2nd order effects.”
