Nakamura-Tome Launches Semiconductor & Optics Business Division

HAKUSAN, Ishikawa, Japan, Sep 1, 2026 – Nakamura-Tome Precision Industry Co., Ltd. is pleased to announce the establishment of its new Semiconductor & Optics Business Division.

The Semiconductor & Optics Business Division was established to contribute to the advancement of the next-generation semiconductor industry by combining the precision machining technologies cultivated over many years in the optical field with semiconductor material processing technologies developed in recent years.

Since entering the glass lens processing market in 1972, Nakamura-Tome has continuously advanced its precision processing technologies for a wide range of brittle-material products, including glass lenses, LCD panels, optical filters, and cover glass. In recent years, the company has received a growing number of inquiries regarding the processing of semiconductor wafers and glass substrates used in semiconductor packaging, and has accumulated extensive experience through collaborative development projects with customers.

To further strengthen these efforts, Nakamura-Tome has brought its optical and semiconductor technologies together under a single organization, establishing the Semiconductor & Optics Business Division.

Artificial intelligence, data centers, autonomous driving, and robotics are rapidly transforming our society. At the same time, the electricity demand associated with these advancements is increasing dramatically, creating new challenges in realizing a sustainable society.

Through processing technologies for power semiconductors and advanced semiconductor packaging, we aim to help realize a society in which electricity is used more efficiently and information can be transmitted with less energy.

The Semiconductor & Optics Business Division will help build the foundation for the society of the future through advanced material processing technologies.

A Challenge Only Nakamura-Tome Can Take On

For Nakamura-Tome, entering the semiconductor industry was never simply about extending our existing business. Our development efforts began in response to highly demanding customer requirements and our belief that Nakamura-Tome could solve these challenges by leveraging its expertise in optical processing machinery.

Together with our customers, we have successfully tackled some of the industry’s most difficult processing challenges, including:

  • Beveling hard and brittle semiconductor materials such as SiC and GaN
  • Processing small-diameter wafers down to 0.5 inches in diameter
  • Beveling ultra-thin materials less than 100 μm thick

Through close collaboration with our customers, we have developed the technologies needed to overcome these challenges.

We are more than just an equipment manufacturer.

Our goal is to develop processing methods that do not yet exist anywhere in the world and transform them into reliable, mass-production-ready technologies.

Solutions We Provide

In semiconductor manufacturing, chipping, breakage, and contamination at wafer edges can significantly reduce production yields. Edge processing, also known as beveling, plays a critical role in preventing these issues.

The Semiconductor & Optics Business Division offers:

  • Edge-processing equipment for semiconductor wafers
  • Edge-processing equipment for glass substrates
  • Processing equipment for small-diameter and diced workpieces
  • Processing equipment for optical materials

Our flagship machine, the NMPG-450, delivers high-precision edge processing for wafers ranging from 2 to 12 inches in diameter and glass substrates measuring up to 320 × 320 mm. The LC-50 enables high-quality processing of small-diameter wafers and diced workpieces up to 50 mm in diameter.
